There is absolutely no surprise that cheerleading is becoming more and more difficult each year and will continue to do so. Most people still think that cheerleading is all fun and games and that no one gets hurt, but that is not the case at all. Cheerleading has come to be the most dangerous sport for women. It's shocking to many, but it's the truth. In an article Cheerleading-Related Injuries in the United States: A Prospective Surveillance Study, they talk about the difficultly of cheerleading and why there are so many injuries. They did a study that showed that most cheerleading injuries occur during practice because they are attempting a stunt that is too difficult for their level or are not coached properly. The study also shows that most cheerleading injuries are sprains or strains. College cheerleaders are more likely to sustain concussions while All Star cheerleaders are more likely to sustain fractures or dislocations. In the study a total of 567 cheerleaders were injured during the one year study out of 412 teams. 50 cheerleaders were injured multiple times; 40 cheerleaders were injured on 2 occasions, and 10 were injured on three. The 50 cheerleaders were members of 5 All Star, 5 collegiate, and 13 high school teams, and 2 injuries were elementary school children. This study was very interesting because most people don't know just how dangerous cheerleading is and will continue to be. More and more people are dying, getting hospitalized, and breaking bones. The government needs to step up and realize that cheerleading needs regulations and needs to be recognized as a sport, before it's too late. We need qualified coaches so we can prevent many more injuries. Who's with me?!
