Cheerleading
Brief History: Cheerleading has been around for quite a while, dating back to November 2, 1898 at the University of Minnesota. Johnny Campbell organized a group of six male students to cheer on their football players at the games. Only a few short years later the first cheerleading fraternity was established called Gamma Sigma. Originally, cheerleading was an all male activity, but eventually opened up to women. Now women have taken over cheerleading, grossing to almost 97% female. At the beginning of cheerleading, cheerleading mainly use to consist of gymnastics, tumbling, and cheers, but today cheerleading is far more complex consisting up of jumps, tumbling, gymnastics, cheers, stunts, and difficult pyramids. Also cheerleading is far less restricted than it use to be because cheerleaders are able to decide on what kind of cheerleading they want to pursue. What this means is that cheerleading is not just a group of girls/boys cheering on a recreational sport. Today there are school-sponsored squads, college cheerleading, youth leagues, professional spirit squads, and All-star cheerleading. Each division is completely different. Purpose: I am one of many who believe that cheerleading is in fact a sport and I hope that this website will help understand why I believe it is.
